New Treatment for BPH

New Treatment for BPH

BPh is an acronym which stands for Benign Prostate Hyperplasia.  This basically means enlarged prostate.  This is a condition which affects a majority of men as they age.  The main complaint of these men is the frequent night-time trips to the bathroom to urinate. There is a new non-surgical treatment for the condition which is called PAE or Prostatic Artery Embolization. PAE is a minimally invasive and non-surgical treatment that can shrink the prostate and provide relief from symptoms according to a study presented at the Society of Interventional Radiology’s 38th Annual Scientific Meeting in New Orleans.  The early findings for the first prospective United States trial of PAE showed that it reduces blood flow to the prostate causing it to shrink. This is exciting news as medications are of limited value in the treatment of BPH.  Surgeries commonly used to treat BPH can not only be risky, but can cause significant side effects.  The minimally invasive alternative PAE treatment seems to reduce symptoms in an overwhelming majority of men.  In fact, 13 of 14 men who had PAE noticed significant decrease of symptoms after 1 month.  None had any major complications and most went home the same day as treatment.  Study participants reported lifestyle changing effect after treatment.  Some were able to discontinue medications altogether.
